RCD - what is it and what it can do for you
A Residual Current Device is a life saving device which prevents you getting a fatal electric shock if you touch something live, such as bare wire. It provides a level of protection that ordinary fuses or circuit-breakers cannot provide.
Every year in the UK around 70 people die and 350,000 are seriously injured in electrical accidents at home. Almost a third of these accidents happen as a result of people using faulty household appliances or damaging electric cables when they are doing DIY or gardening.
Many of these injuries and deaths could be prevented by having RCD protection - whether by using a plug-in adaptor, or, better still, getting it installed in your consumer unit (fusebox) or sockets.
Having a modern consumer unit fitted with RCDs that cover all the wiring, sockets and appliances in your home will offer you the best protection.
From using everyday electrical appliances to power tools, your whole family will be much safer using electricity.
